Making a homemade heating pad is very easy using handy ingredients you probably have already in your kitchen. Whether you have muscle pain, migraine, menstrual cramps or for just warming yourself up, it is a very good idea having a heating pad in the first place.
Like most normal pad, homemade heating pad might be effective for any physical pain anywhere in your body parts especially for lower and upper back pain.
You can easily make homemade heating pad by using few different methods, depending which materials and filling you have available at your home and how much time you can spend sewing.
There are several amazing benefits of using the heating pad you probably did not know about.
Let’s discuss the two methods of making a homemade heating pad:
Heating Pad Made with A Sock
Sock filled with uncooked rice
The easiest and simple method of making a heating pad using a sock filled with rice. It just requires old socks, some uncooked rice, and a microwave oven. You can also use corn, buckwheat hulls, flax seed, barley, oatmeal or even beans to make it fill as your desire.
- You can use any amount of rice, but my personal recommendation that the sock should be half to three-quarters full at least.
- Do not make it overfill; you should make it flexible as well so that the pad can fit into your skin easily and comfortably.
Add some aroma oil for scent
You can consider adding some lavender oil or any other dried herbs as well to get a perfect soothing experience if you have a headache and want to have a fresh, nice aroma at the same time. Just simply add few drops of lavender oil or dried herbs and mix it well before filling it up into the sock.
Tie the knot
Now it’s time to tie up the sock. You can do it by sewing or by using a rubber band which helps you to place it flatly in the microwave oven. In case if you need to make it super hot I personally recommend to avoid rubber band which has a chance to loose or melts away when you put it in the microwave.
Microwave the sock
Your homemade heating pad is ready to go. Simply put it in the microwave and heat it up there. One and half minutes to two minutes are usually good for making it work.
Actually, it depends on the size of your heating pad, if you are using a bigger one, you should place it in the microwave for longer than 2 minutes. You should check yourself how hot is convenient for you.
A cup of water alongside the sock is the better idea for minimizing the overheat. It also prevents the sock from bursting.
Heating Pad Made with a Towel
Get a towel
This is by far the easiest way to make a homemade heat pack. It just requires a small towel which is available in every home.
You should use a good size of towel and in the case of a small area covering you can use face towel as well, no problem at all. You have to fold it in thirds the long way like as hot dog way. Now it’s time to roll it up like a sleeping bag.
Now use hot tap water or you can use boiling water for making it hot. Do not make it too hot which can burn your skin and make an adverse effect on your body.
If you do not want to use hot water directly on the towel, in this case, you can just soak it in the normal water and squeeze it out. For better treatment and most effective hot pack do not squeeze all the water out from the towel. Now microwave it for 2 to 3 minutes and heat it up.
Your homemade heat pack it ready to go but remember that you should not use it directly on your skin, rather use a very thin layer of cloth between your body and the towel for safety and extra pleasure.
This moist heat pack is the better one rather than rice filling heat pack which is more easy to make and effective for relieving any types of physical pain.
Zipper Bag Alternatives
You can also use zipper bag instead of sock for making a heat bag which is very handy and easy as well. But you have to be very careful that do not make it overheat, otherwise, it may burst while you heat it in the microwave.
A homemade heating pad is very easy to make and handy to use as well but if you would like to get a proper treatment and getting relief from any pain shortly especially from chronic pain, my personal recommendation to use the best heating pad which is available in market and online.
It will provide you safety and perfect way of treatment with some other extra benefits as well.
